Quotables #94: Movies Within Movies
People in real life quote movies all the time, so it only makes sense that people in motion pictures can do the same. Here are some exchanges of dialogue where characters discuss, name-drop, and quote other real-life films. Your job is to guess which movies they're from.
Man:
What's your favorite scary movie?
Woman:
I don't know.
Man:
You have to have a favorite.
Woman:
Uh...'Halloween.' You know, the one with the guy with the white mask who just sorta walks around and stalks the babysitters. What's yours?
Man:
Guess.
Woman:
Uh...'Nightmare on Elm Street.'
Man:
Is that the one where the guy had knives for fingers?
Woman:
Yeah, Freddy Krueger.
Man:
Freddy - that's right. I liked that movie. It was scary.
Woman:
The first one was, but the rest sucked.
Movie 1:
Man #1:
Which did you like better: 'Jedi' or 'The Empire Strikes Back?'
Man #2:
'Empire.'
Man #1:
Blasphemy.
Man #2:
'Empire' had the better ending. I mean, Luke gets his hand cut off, finds out Vader's his father. Han gets frozen, taken away by Boba Fett. It ends on such a down note. I mean, that's what life is: a series of down endings. All 'Jedi' had was a bunch of Muppets.
Movie 2:
Man #1:
Toby, what movie could possibly be worth drivin' 260 miles round trip for?
Man #2:
It's a new film called 'Revenge of the Nerds.' It's about a group of nerd college students who are being picked on all the time by the jocks, so they decide to take revenge. I already saw it once.
Man #1:
Wow, ya really dig this movie.
Man #2:
I like it a lot, Harvey.
Man #1:
What are these nerds like? How would you describe them?
Man #2:
Hmm...Nerds are smart but they look and act differently than other people. Like, nerds might wear polyester button-down shirts and flood pants where their ankles and their socks are showing.
Man #1:
So what yer sayin' is you identify with those nerds?
Man #2:
Yes, I consider myself a nerd. And this movie has uplifted me...
Movie 3:
Man #1:
You know what? Women are suckers for 'Sleepless in Seattle.' It's on HBO this month. That's your bait right there.
Man #2:
Robin loves that movie.
Man #1:
They all do. Next time you talk to her, tell her you're cooking yourself dinner and watching it by yourself. Sound like you're happier than a pig in shit. She'll come running. Betcha. Then just play it cool.
Man #2:
Maybe I will.
Movie 4:
Man:
...I just wish they made them like they used to. You know, something like 'The Heartbreak Kid'...or 'Harold and Maude.'
Woman:
'Harold and Maude' is my all-time favorite movie.
Man:
Ouch. Come on, don't bust my chops. I know it's corny, but I do love it.
Woman:
Pat, I'm not kidding. I really think it's the greatest -
Man:
- love story of our time.
Woman:
Yeah.
Man:
Wow. I thought I was the only one.
