Quotables #93: The Collective Cinema of Dustin Hoffman
Continuing our Collective Cinema Quotable game, we've decided to pick the movies of Dustin Hoffman. Each of the following quotes or snippets of dialogue are spoken by Hoffman. Your job is to guess which movies they're from.
Hoffman: I'm an excellent driver.
Man: When did you drive?
Hoffman: I drove slow on the driveway when my dad came to Walbrook.
Man: Was Dad in the car?
Hoffman: Yeah.
Man: I'll have to let you drive sometime. ...Raymond, you never, never touch the steering wheel when I'm driving! Do you hear me? Do you hear me?
Movie 1:
Hoffman: Mrs. Robinson, I can't do this.
Woman: You what?
Hoffman: This is all terribly wrong.
Woman: Do you find me undesirable?
Hoffman: Oh, no, Mrs. Robinson. I think, I think you're the most attractive of all my parents' friends. I mean that.
Movie 2:
Hoffman: Are you saying that nobody in New York will work with me?
Man: No, no, that's too limited. Nobody in Hollywood wants to work with you either. I can't even set you up for a commercial. You played a tomato for 30 seconds. They went a half a day over schedule because you wouldn't sit down.
Hoffman: Of course. It was illogical.
Man: You were a tomato! A tomato doesn't have logic! A tomato can't move!
Hoffman: That's what I said. So if he can't move, how's he gonna sit down, George? I was a stand-up tomato: a juicy, sexy, beefsteak tomato. Nobody does vegetables like me. I did an evening of vegetables off-Broadway. I did the best tomato, the best cucumber... I did an endive salad that knocked the critics on their ass.
Movie 3:
Man: I'm jokin' around, guys. But seriously, I want to quit the process with you. Nothing personal. I appreciate what you've done for me, but I'm over it.
Woman: You can't quit until the case is over.
Man: Ah, I can fire you.
Hoffman: No, you can't.
Man: Sure I can.
Hoffman: No, you can't. Paragraph 201. "Neither client nor detective may terminate case prior to resolution as defined by paragraph 314, subclause 'd.'" Which states -
Man: That's not binding.
Hoffman: Oh, it's binding.
Man: I'll find a lawyer. Or maybe even go to the FBI. How 'bout that?
Hoffman: Go ahead.
Man: Oh, I will. I'm not kidding.
Woman: Brad, this is how it works. You go to the police. You tell them you went to the existential detectives. They ask why. You say, "For personal reasons." Or maybe you wanted to work the politics at your corporation by rattling Albert Markovski.
Man: I never told you that.
Hoffman: Well, give us a little credit.
Movie 4:
Man: I hate this bug.
Hoffman: Oh, come on, Casey. You have to admire its simplicity. It's one billionth our size, and it's beating us.
Man: So, what do you want to do? Take it to dinner?
Hoffman: No.
Man: What, then?
Hoffman: Kill it.
